"I prefer to take ‘landscape’ as a collective term for the … transitory phenomena and atmospheres that together comprise the bristling presence of a particular place at a particular moment" ― Robert Macfarlane, The Old Ways

Our Story

Connecting people and landscape.

Field Art Space is passionate about the arts and delivering high quality education programmes that inspire and foster curiosity about the world around us.

Kate Hammersley set up Field Art Space during the pandemic. Having spent 25 years as a professional artist and qualified educator she wanted to set up a creative space with high quality courses where the environment was at the heart of the project. With a firm belief in the benefits of drawing from direct observation and having been a professor at Savannah College of Art and Design USA, she planned the first course – an introduction in drawing. As a member of the Royal Society of Sculptors she continues her own art practice whilst developing Field Art Space. Her projects included ‘slow looking’ making work about animal tracks and wildflower meadows supported by Arts Council England.

Since the early days of Field Art Space, more people have been welcomed and more courses have been added with lessons indoors and outdoors using a wide range of media and foraged materials, and we're now solar-powered! Being creative is good for wellbeing and we remain committed to delivering high quality and enjoyable courses for absolute beginners and those with experience who want to develop their practice.

Our Values are at the heart of what we do at the studio:

Be Creative – creative thinking to find creative solutions.

Positive impact – to enrich people’s lives through the arts.

Professional and personable – delivering high quality, innovative courses tailored to the needs of learners.

Building connections – connecting people, landscape and creativity. To never stop learning...

In the future we look forward to developing engaging online courses and meeting new students. And of course, we'll be creating lots more art!

Testimonials

Kate instills confidence in me with her quiet, practical and always encouraging advice. As very much a beginner I am always inspired to try new things by Kate’s enthusiasm and detailed explanations.

Lately on the on-line courses Kate is able to make it feel very interactive and interesting with a mixture of the class altogether doing exercises, working on our own pieces and also one-to-one time factored in for individual tuition.

Kate comes to lessons well-prepared and student-focused. During my time with her she has enabled me to gain more confidence in my work, to experiment, and to develop in my own way. This has been due to her empathy and patience, as well as her own deep knowledge and experience across disciplines.
